God is not done with America as long as America is not done with God. The closer we get to the coming of the Lord the more my heart is stirred about the role God desires our nation to play in the events of these last days. I am proud to be an American today – but I also recognize the responsibility we must accept if America is going to continue to be the great nation that God has intended for her to be. It is important that we as believers memorize this Scripture and allow it to permeate your spirit and transform our lives:
Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
The Exalted Nation is Set-Apart
One of the meanings of the word “exalt” is “to be lifted up, to be made high.” Scripture declares that God Himself is exalted, His Word is exalted, and Israel is exalted above the nations. But I believe this verse declares that America can be exalted as well – as long we remain a righteous nation! There is no other nation on earth which has been lifted up and exalted more than America! The United States has been at the forefront of history throughout the 20th century. But our greatness is inextricably linked to our Godliness. As our level of Godliness decreases – so our level of greatness decreases. You cannot separate one from the other.
The Exalted Nation is Safe
Another sub-meaning of the word “exalt” is “to raise high as an inaccessible fortress, out of the reach of danger.” Psalm 32:7 “Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.” I look around and see so many nations that have been destroyed by their enemies; by plagues and pestilence; by natural disasters. But America is still standing strong. Isn’t that a testament to God’s protection and preservation? But will that protection be here if we do not maintain our state of righteousness? God’s protection only comes to those who remain under His care – please pray that we do not remove ourselves from the protection of our Heavenly Father.
The Exalted Nation is Strong
Another shade of meaning of the word “exalt” is “to triumph over enemies.” Think of the odds of the colonies defeating the most powerful nation in the 18th century world, the British Empire. Yet, it happened. We take for granted our victory in the Revolutionary War. We assume that our power then resembled our power today. Not true! It was a miracle from God that America gained her freedom from England. Why did the Civil War not tear this nation apart? It had to be the protection of God. In World War II, America took on much of the world essentially single handedly and assured freedom throughout the globe. What concerns me is to see the strength of America dissipating on the world stage. We have become a joke to so many nations overseas. Where has our strength gone? As our righteousness diminishes so does our strength!
I challenge you this week to take extra time to pray for our country. May we celebrate the fact we are Americans but also accept our responsibility to pray for this great nation as well. The church is the compass which declares the moral and spiritual direction of our country. Together – let’s point our country in the direction of the righteousness of God and we will remain:
Set Apart – Safe – and Strong!
