The Martha Complex
We’ve all been stressed at one point or another in our lives. You feel the walls closing in, the deadlines pressing, and you can’t seem to stop thinking about just how much you have to do and just how little time you have to do it. At its worst, this kind of stress paralyzes us not only from doing what we need to do, but hearing from God as He tries to get our attention as our mind whirs. This phenomenon can be called the Martha Complex, named after one of Jesus’ friends who was just too busy.
Martha and Mary are fairly well-known characters in the Gospels. Martha is known as the stressed-out sister who was too caught up in the day to day work of preparing her house that she missed what her sister Mary caught early on: it’s more important to sit at Jesus’ feet than it is to be caught up in busywork. Jesus had some words of caution for people caught up in Martha’s mindset. Join Dr. Mark Lantz as he dives into this famous story in this sermon entitled The Martha Complex.
